I didn’t want to paint just a landscape, still life, or wildlife. I wanted something deeply Japanese — something that carried tradition, emotion, and quiet meaning. That’s when the idea came: the Maneki-neko, the lucky cat.

He is white, so I needed a background that would let him gently stand out. Not black — too heavy. Blue. A soft, rich blue that holds him like twilight holds a lantern.

I chose to paint him with his right paw raised, a gesture that invites happiness and good fortune. Not just for anyone — but for someone who may one day become his owner. Someone whose home and family might need a quiet blessing.

I added the kanji 招き猫 to the canvas, letting the characters speak softly beside him. His gold coin reads 千万両 — ten million ryo — a symbol of abundance. But his gaze is calm, almost knowing. He doesn’t shout luck. He offers it gently.

This painting is more than a symbol. It’s a quiet wish — for joy, connection, and the kind of luck that feels like warmth.

風景画や静物画、野生動物を描くだけでは満足できませんでした。伝統、感情、そして静かな意味を帯びた、深く日本的な何かが描きたかったのです。そこで思いついたのが、招き猫、つまり幸運の猫です。

招き猫は白いので、優しく際立つ背景が必要でした。黒は重すぎるので避け、青を選びました。夕暮れの光が提灯を灯すように、柔らかく深い青が招き猫を包み込むように。

私は招き猫の右足を上げている姿を描くことにしました。これは幸福と幸運を招くしぐさです。誰のためでもなく、いつか招き猫の飼い主になるかもしれない誰かのために。家や家族に静かな祝福を必要としている誰かのために。

キャンバスに「招き猫」という漢字を描き加え、招き猫の横で優しく語りかけるようにしました。金貨には「千万両」と書かれており、豊かさの象徴です。しかし、招き猫の視線は穏やかで、まるで何かを悟っているかのようです。彼は幸運を叫んでいるのではなく、優しく幸運を差し出しています。

この絵は単なる象徴ではありません。それは、喜び、つながり、そして温かさのように感じられる幸運への静かな願いです。
